SAI finally fixed in Domino 8.5 :-)

Daniel Nashed – 15 January 2009 23:43:45
In Domino 6.0 a new calculation method for the Server Availability Index (SAI) as been introduced.
Since this time we had many issues with the SAI (used for load-balancing in cluster environments).

There have been a couple of issues fixed in previous released but we had customers still running into odd SAI values in some situations.

I worked closely with a customer and IBM/Lotus support to nail this problem down (thru a lot of debug hotfixes) and finally got the problem resolved :-)

The main issue is fixed by SPR #ATHN7GE9WL which will also be fixed in 7.0.4 and 8.0.3.

There are a couple of pending SPR currently planned for 7.0.4, 8.0.3 and 8.5.1 with more troubleshooting and configuration options for special cluster environment conditions.

For example if you have a server with users having fast and slow connections (e.g. with high latency) there might be still some issues.

But the general problems in the back-end have been fixed.
We have verified this with a lot of extra debugging code in a large enterprise production environment.

When you install 8.5 you should directly delete the loadmon.ncf file which holds historic minimum transaction times in micro seconds.

Those times are compared with the current average values of the 12 transaction types measured for the SAI.

You have to be sure to delete the file when the server is down because loadmon.ncf is written on shutdown.

If you still run into problems with 8.5 and SAI after resetting the loadmon transactions I am interested to hear about it via mail.
