Improving Startup Performance for Notes 8.5 Standard Client

Daniel Nashed  14 January 2009 14:00:58
The warm and cold start performance of the Notes 8.5 Client has already improved a lot in 8.5 and I am quite happy (starting on Linux still seems to be faster).
There is one simple best practice that you should apply after installing the client. The installer writes many thousand files which can cause some fragmentation on disk.

It can help to improve startup performance if you defrag your disk or at least the Domino program directory.

You can either use the included defrag tools in Windows or use a 3rd party tool (most of them are more effective but cost money).
There is one free tool from one of the Sysinternals developers called Contig which has a very simple command-line and can align a single directory.

Here is the
link to Microsoft Technet.

defraggler is a nice free program from the makers of crap cleaner for windows

www.defragler.com

www.ccleaner.com

crapcleaner has a very nice registry cleaning tool, which always uncovers errors or leftovers after any software installation.

I think it is one of those mysteries of Windows how you can have 40GB free on a hard drive and Windows insists on fragmenting the files.

Contig is cool as you can do a directory or a single file. If defragmenting NSF's I would recommend compact -b and then defrag (works good when you have an even flow of new documents and deleted documents each week). Less likelyhood of the file fragmenting as fast as compact -B or -C.

A few weeks ago, Rocky Oliver mentioned JKDefrag, an excellent, open source defragger. I downloaded it and have been using it. I am pleased with it.

That's incredible. After using Contig (which really needs some time for that thousands of files) my client now starts within 5 seconds instead of up to one minute before defragmentation.

Thanks for that nice tip

Excellent tip!

Is there a similar need for a Linux or a Mac client? What tools would one use?

Hello,

also thanks. An easy but really great Tip to speed up Notes-Startup. Thanks.

Sounded promissing. I did use the tool to defrag my Notes programm and data directory. As reports stated, I experienced a total ratio of 1,7/1 fragments before/after the run. The startup preformance therefor did not change. It is still about 75 second for a cold start on my machine....

Looking forward for other great tips...
