Continue using dots in servernames with Domino V12

Daniel Nashed  10 April 2021 16:59:38

Many of us used a dot in their domino server common names, because specially for internet facing servers, this made DNS a lot easier.

For example one of my Domino servers is named: CN=domino.nashcom.de/OU=Srv/O=NashCom-Net

With Domino 12 the dot has been removed form the list of supported chars.

So the chars: "
&-. _" are prevented from being used when registering a server.

An underscore was arguable, because it is not officially supported by DNS.

I recall that discussion when I started with Notes ages ago.

But the name choice also had to take into account NETBIOS..

It is always good to prevent naming, that might cause issues later.

But in this case, the dot is really a useful char and is safe to use.

I would still avoid underscores and stay with "-".

Just checked, Let's Encrypt for example rejects underscores.

There is way to allow underscores and dots again in Domino V12.

If you are looking into the final beta 3, this info might already help you testing ...
